Why Democracy?

Winston Churchill said “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all
of the others.” Certainly democracy has its problems, but let’s look at some of the benefits of a
democratic form of government.

  1. Freedom of Expression. In a democracy people have the right to express their opinions,
    challenge authority, and engage in public debate.
  2. Protection of Rights. Democracies have constitutions that guarantee fundamental rights, such
    as freedom of religion and the right to bear arms.
  3. Regular Elections. Citizens can choose their leaders and hold them accountable.

  4. Promote Stability and Peace. Democracies provide for the peaceful transfer of power.
  5. Economic Freedom. Democracies allows its citizens to own property, start a business, and
    engage in commerce.
  6. Social welfare. Democracies tend to be more responsive to social issues and to reduce
    inequality.
